Year Round Puppetry at Boston's Puppet Showplace Theatre
I love the little, lesser known places that aren't touristy or just full of people. It's hard to have a family experience with your kids when you're standing in line or constantly worrying about your kids being stepped on.
I found this wonderful little children's theater in Boston called the Puppet Showplace Theatre. I guess it's the only theater in New England to offer year-round puppetry. My kids and I love it. It's the perfect space for kids and families. Very bright and colorful while also being intimate.
You walk into the lobby and it just says "fun." And the theater room is sort of small, which I think it great for kids. I've seen several shows and they range from cute and simple for the littlest ones to impressive works of art that are appreciated by adults.
Most of the stories seem to be fairy tales that everyone recognizes, but sometimes with a twist. For instance, they tell the story of Cinderella as a fairy who lives in a tree. Instead of the traditional glass slipper, the prince searches for the girl with 'goodness' in her eyes - a value that means much more than a shoe that happens to be the right size.
And the original shows are hilarious. A group called Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers comes down from Maine and they do shows very much in the flavor of the old Muppet Show: very silly and charming, with a humor that both kids and parents can appreciate.
I love that this little theater provides kids with accessibility to live performing arts. Afterwards, they talk about their favorite parts (sometimes longer than you'd like them to) but you know that the experience stuck with them. And then they come home and they want to do it themselves, often making it unintentionally funnier than the original. The Puppet Showplace Theater gets two thumbs up from me. www.puppetshowplace.org
