World's Largest Ball of Paint, Alexandria, Indiana
I know it might sound silly, but my family absolutely loves to go to the World's Largest Ball of Paint in Alexandria, Indiana. It's next to the home of Michael Carmichael, who applies coats of paint to it.
It started as a baseball that has been painted since 1977. It is now the world's largest ball according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
It is more than 1,500 pounds and has more than 20,000 coats on it. My children are thrilled to know that at the center of the ball sits a baseball that Michael's son painted when he was 3 years old.
I think what amazes my children is the fact that this man has kept up the ball for over 30 years. It's a testament to what people can do if they keep at it.
It has inspired my sons to stick with their sports hobbies and get better and better. Sometimes when they need a reminder, I say "layers of paint" and they usually go right back to it.
The ball of paint is on our way to my mother's house, so we usually drop by about four times a year to see what color it is. Michael lets people look at it for free. We have more than a few family pictures around the ball of paint.
Once, Michael let us paint on a coat, which was the highlight of our day. We got our picture taken, got a certificate and signed a guest book to commemorate our visit. If you're looking for a quick stop in Alexandria, we highly recommend the ball of paint. http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/9792
