Arkansas Arts Center
I love the Arkansas Arts Center
It is a large, cool, comfortable building laid out on two levels, the perfect place to roam through in the hot Arkansas summer.
For those who simply enjoy seeing what they've only seen in text books, the Arts Center offers a rotating collection of the paintings by masters like Degas and Picasso. For the arts scholar, the Arts Center has invested in a sizable collection of drawings unlikely to be found elsewhere, including sketches and studys by the great painters. Simply call ahead to see first hand works other may never even know existed.
In the past, the Arts Center has has hosted exhibitions from such various things as 19th century photography to award-winning children's art projects to its current showing of the World of the Pharaohs exhibit. This current exhibit shows not just the trappings of mummies, but also shows and explains the daily life of Ancient Egypt, and audio guides are available.
Plays at the Children's Theatre are a lot of fun and a good choice of entertainment for families with small children, ranging from fairy tales to stage versions of favorite children's books, like Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
People who like to would like to take a piece of the museum home with them will certainly find something worth keeping the strange, interesting contents of the gift shop, ranging from jewelry and small goods made by Arkansas Artists to funny boardgames.
The Arts Center adjoins MacArthur Park, which is perfect for a picnic, and is also close to a number of other attractions, including the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, the Arkansas State Capital, the Old State House, the River Market, the Clinton Presidential Library, and the Museum of Discovery, making it easy to spend a day seeing the sights downtown Little Rock has to offer.
