It's easy to do. Here is one reader's recommendation:
Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum
A visit to the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum is absolutely a must if you are visiting Tucson Arizona. The museum, which is located on approximately 21 acres of stunning desert landscape, is about 15 miles west of Tucson.
The winding road to the museum will take you through the Tucson Mountains and a beautiful forest of Saguaro cacti.
After entering the museum, be sure to get a map, which will guide you through the many paths that traverse the grounds.
With over 300 species of desert critters to see, there is something for everyone.
Animals such as the Mountain Lions, Big Horn Sheep, Coyotes and Javelinas are always a favorite to see and the enclosures that house these beautiful creatures are built to mirror their natural habitats.
For those who would like a more intimate experience with desert animals, the "Live and on the Loose Exhibit" is for you.
Expert handlers will give you the opportunity to see Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes and Gila Monsters up close in an exhibit that is both educational and entertaining. If you happen to be visiting during the summer months, plan a visit on a Saturday evening when the museum remains open until 10 PM.
A nighttime visit will give you the chance to see the museum in a totally different atmosphere in which the animals are more active. You can see scorpions glow an eerie green under a black light, scurrying along a stone wall or possibly encounter, on the Desert Loop Path, one of the loose rattlesnakes that inhabit the museum grounds.
These snakes have all been tagged with radio transmitters in order to track their movements and as with any wild animal, use caution and do not attempt to handle these beautiful, yet dangerous creatures. If you chose to visit the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum, make sure you bring along plenty of sunscreen and a pair of good walking shoes. And don't forget to bring a camera to document this extraordinary experience.
