Silver Mountain Kellogg, Idaho
I would recommend Silver Mountain for any family, any time of year! The gondola ride is worth the trip alone, being the longest gondola in the northwest at 3 miles up the side of the mountain. On the ride up, there are absolutely spectacular sights as it overlooks the town, forest, and clearings. One winter I even saw a bear and her cubs from the car. Located in a mining town, Silver Mountain is best known as a ski resort, although they have year round activities. In the summertime, there is a blues festival annually, and several things to do such as mountain biking, hiking, going to one of their shows, and just hanging out in the lodge. My favorite time of year at Silver however, is winter. Going up the gondola can be a little chilly, so dress warm! (and hope that it doesn’t stop when you’re on it, it bounces a little!) When you get to the top, you are in a winter wonderland! Getting off the gondola at the lodge, you have the option to go eat, visit the shop, or just put your skis on and enjoy as you are at the top already- no waiting in line for lifts! I would recommend going down a couple of easy slopes (greens) to warm up. For the kiddos, in the winter they have an awesome sledding course set up with inner tubes. (this is fun for adults too, just don’t let the kids you’re doing it for you- make them think that you HAVE to watch them) and have the time of your life while they race you down! The lodge at Silver Mountain is great- they have good food for being a quick diner, people have always been really friendly, and you get to warm up/cool down from any activity that you have been experiencing. I would recommend anyone go to Silver Mountain at least once in their life- even I, who am afraid of heights, go every year just to experience the gondola’s beautiful scope, the natural setting of the mountains, and be able to relax in “God’s Backyard.” See you there~!
