Schell's Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota
A unique and beautiful spot to visit in Minnesota is the Schell’s Brewery in New Ulm, Minnesota. What’s so good about a brewery? Schell’s is one of the few working long time family owned breweries in the country.
The only way you can reach it is by a winding road overlooking the Cottonwood River in a heavily wooded area. The scenery in the area is gorgeous any time of the year. The site contains a beautiful large brick house built by one of the first owners of the brewery and a large flower garden that is planted with many colorful varieties of flowers in the summer months. There is always something in bloom in the warm months but it is also beautiful in winter.
Around the Christmas holiday season they line the paths of the garden with lit candles in paper bags which give off a warm glow against the white snow. Peacocks roam the garden and a fenced in area contains deer.
I found the museum on the site to be very interesting and tours of the brewery are given at set times. If you need a souvenir, they have a large gift shop with a variety of merchandise. The windows of the shop and museum face a ravine through which the Cottonwood River flows and it also has a scenic overlook to enjoy the scenery any time of the year.
We found numerous other attractions in the area when we were there, such as Flandrau State Park, Brown County Historical Museum, the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Hermann the German Statue from which you can overlook the city of New Ulm from it’s peak and the Way of the Cross, to name a few. If you like to shop there were many gift shops in New Ulm’s historic downtown area. We found it a worthwhile place to visit for young and old --- a nice weekend trip.
