Cafe du Monde and St Louis Cemetery
My favorite place to bring my children is Cafe du Monde. Sure, it's touristy. Sure, it's a little busy, sometimes a lot, and the floors are perpetually coated with either pigeons or powdered sugar, but there's a reason why it's so popular with people and birds alike.
The beignets are truly a wonder.
Soft and sweet, these doughnut bars are cooked fresh throughout the day.
They're served warm and topped with a generous coating of powdered sugar.
While I wouldn't suggest them before bedtime, kids love these.
I would also not suggest dark clothing, as the sugar will be everywhere, no matter how many napkins are used.
The adults will enjoy them too, perhaps with a cafe au lait as a little pick me up.
While it might seem like a strange option, St. Louis Cemetery #1 is good place to get an important history lesson about New Orleans.
While not a big draw for families with small kids who won't want to walk much, older children will appreciated the history and culture lessons the cemetery has to offer.
The graves give an intimate look at the lives and deaths of people living in the city through flooding and epidemics. This is still a functioning graveyard, so visitors are urged to be respectful.
Allegedly the burial place of voodoo queen Marie Laveau, tourists and locals still leave favors, such as beads, money and feathers, at her mausoleum. Daily tours are available through the nonprofit historical group Save Our Cemeteries.
