Danish Windmill and Immigrant Museum
The Danish Windmill in Elkhorn, Iowa is a awesome sight to see inside and out! As well as the Danish Immigrant Museum nearby with all its information about the Danish Immigrants that settled in the area.
Inside the Windmill you will see a genuine interior of a working windmill actually turning with the wind and running a grindstone!
This windmill was actually built in 1848 in Norre Snede, Denmark.
It was one man's dream to bring this windmill to a area where many Danish people had settled years before.
So the citizens began to raise the funds to move this windmill while a Danish carpenter built a scale model (to understand how to reassemble it once in Iowa) and began to dismantle the windmill for future shipment.
This was all done by 1976 and is now the only windmill in America. It is a fantastic location for travelers, being only a few miles north of Interstate 80.
It is also a Official Iowa Welcome Center. The fees to tour this fantastic attraction are a minimal $2 for adults, $1 for 12-17 years old, and under 12 is free. Kids love it and adults love it and it is a must stop vacation spot as you travel through Iowa!

Then over to the Danish Immigrant Museum nearby you will find the museum that was founded in 1983 and finally built in 1994 with significant artifacts important to the Danish Immigration Story. What you will find in this museum would be anything from clothes, dishes, needlework, or just your basic wooden clogs.
There is a wealth of artifacts and information here sure to keep you busy for hours! The museum still seeks and collects information on Danish Immigrants who came to North America from anyone willing to submit their resources.
