Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut, Niantic
A few years ago, I took my nine-year old twins to visit my cousin in Salem, CT. We went to Mystic Seaport, which they thought was just okay.
Next, we went to an aquarium and it was enjoyable. After that, we went to tour the submarine at the Submarine Base. That was enjoyable too.
However, the next morning, my cousin mentioned that there was a children's museum not too far away. My twins were less than enthusiastic at the thought of a "museum" but we decided to go for a short while.
The museum turned out to be the Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut in Niantic and they had THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES!!!! I couldn't drag them out of there at closing time.
The museum, at that time, was divided into two sections, one part for children over nine years of age, and the other part for those under nine. We started out in the over nine and, though interesting, it was not terribly hands-on.
However, when we went to the under nine section, it was like they had entered into a fantasy world. They spent hours at a pretend radio station, grocery store, doctor's office, fire station. I honestly can't remember what else was available, but there had to be at least 10 different areas.
The place was mobbed with children and they were all either playing with one or two other children or having a ball role-playing on their own.
They had the freedom to go and do whatever they chose. They were able to use their imaginations and express themselves to their hearts' content. I can't say enough about what a wonderful experience this was for my children.
