Montana is home to more than 50 state parks and 10 national forests. National Parks in Montana offer some of the most spectacular views and adventures to be found anywhere in the country.

If you are traveling through the state, knowing where the best state and national parks in Montana are located will allow you to stop off as needed for rest, recreation, exploration, and adventure. This guide will introduce you to some of the best parks located throughout Montana.

State Parks in Montana

Ackley Lake State Park
Stop off at Ackley Lake for an afternoon picnic and hike, or pitch a tent and stay awhile. The lake is routinely stocked with rainbow trout, and boats are available for exploring the water in more depth. There are areas for swimming, and the trails are perfect for bird watching. When the weather is turns cold you can always try your hand at ice fishing. The park covers 160 acres and is the perfect setting for safe family fun.

Big Arm State Park
This is a great Montana state park for longer vacations, but it is also a great stopping point if you are venturing through the northwestern part of the state. Flathead Lake is the premier destination for fishermen, while families and couples tend to flock to the pebble beach of Big Arm Bay. Of course, there are plenty of trees to wander through if you want to get in some exercise or just immerse yourself in the wildlife of Montana.

If you are venturing through northeastern Montana and need a place to bond with nature and stretch your legs, find Brush Lake State Park. The lake stretches out for 280 acres and offers a peaceful environment for an afternoon picnic, a day of fishing, or a bit of time spent out on a boat. Swimming, canoeing, and motor boating is also allowed on the lake. If you want to stay dry, there are trails to hike and many beautiful spots for nature photography.

Brush Lake State Park


Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park
Read up on the prairie dog, and then head to this Montana state park to see the unique animal in its natural habitat. The entire park is less than 100 acres, but it is the beautiful home that protects the prairie dog population from extinction. This is a great place for a day trip or an afternoon break from driving. Come prepared for a picnic and bring the camera, because there is a lot to see in this little park.

Pirogue Island State Park
This park is located off the Yellowstone River located in southeastern Montana. Visitors mostly come to for viewing of the wildlife that naturally flocks to serene, calm island environment. You may encounter fox squirrels, bald eagles, deer, and waterfowl, plus a variety of other animals. Fishing and boating are permitted in the park, though camping is not offered at this time.

Rosebud Battlefield State Park
Rosebud may be a peaceful state park for recreation today, but it was once the site of a vicious battle that lead up to the notorious Battle of Little Bighorn. While learning about this slice of history, you can enjoy a picnic, a hike, or head out for a bit of nature photography. Hunting is also permitted within this park.

Sluice Boxes State Park
This unique state park features a rugged creek wandering out of a canyon from the Little Belt Mountains. Unique park features include remains of old mines, old railroad tracks, and beautiful cabins tucked into the trees. This is a great place to enjoy the water through fishing, swimming, and rafting. You may also enjoy hunting and bird watching in the area.

National Parks in Montana

Glacier National Park
Not only is this one of the most spectacular national parks in Montana, it is one of the most spectacular parks in the United States. It joins with Canada’s Waterton Lakes National Park to create the first International Peace Park ever to be created. If you are passing through make sure to take a drive on the Going-to-the-Sun Road. This two-lane road is reported to take you along the edge of the world, and it offers a unique view of Montana that you will not experience anywhere else. This road also goes through Logan Pass, which takes you across the continental divide.

Glacier National Park


Nez Perce National Historical Park
The Nez Perce National Park offers an educational view of life for the Nez Perce Native American Indians. The beautiful park is perfect for camping, picnicking, and hiking, but you can also visit sites of historical battles and learn about the Nez Perce community. If you take the time to learn some of the stories behind various features of the park, you can turn a trip this park into an educational experience that the entire family remembers for months and years to come.

Yellowstone National Park
If you love the outdoors, you may never want to leave Yellowstone National Park. This is one of the most expansive parks in the world, and it offers some of the most unique park features. You can actually watch geysers erupt, take pictures of enormous waterfalls, and interact with a wide range of wild animals in their natural environment. Of course, the most popular feature of the park is the Grand Canyon. The Canyon brings in droves of visitors each year, but there is so much more to see in this amazing national park.
