Maine Family Friendly Attractions
There are some terrific family-friendly attractions in Maine. Two my childhood favorites are of them are located in York right on the seacoast.
York’s Wild Kingdom http://www.yorkzoo.com/ is both a zoo and an amusement park, and is located down from Short Sands beach. You can ride an elephant, gaze at tigers, and have fun on the bumper cars all for one price. The Merry Go Round is a classic, and it has not changed since I was a child, over 35 years ago!
A few blocks away is The Goldenrod http://www.thegoldenrod.com/ restaurant where you can watch salt water taffy being made in their front display windows.
Drive down to the next town, Kittery on US Route 1 to visit Yummie’s Candy and Nuts http://www.yummies.com/. This store is filled with old fashioned penny candy, as well as hard to time candy bars and confections. The kids will love the sweet smell, and parents will love the nostalgia treats available.
Kittery is also known for its outlet shopping. http://www.thekitteryoutlets.com/ Parents will love the bargains that can be found here.
If you are headed up I-95 to Portland, Another fun thing to do in Maine is to catch a Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t546. The Sea Dogs are the Double A farm team for the Boston Red Sox, and many future Red Sox stars have played here. The stadium is all Maine with the Boston touch – there’s a mini lighthouse that goes off whenever there’s a homerun, and you can sit atop of the Maine Monster - a mini “Green Monster” wall modeled after the real one in Fenway Park complete with a Citgo sign.
