Hagley Museum in Wilmington, Delawareby Serena Mason
Hagley Museum is located in Wilmington, Delaware and is a great place to take the family for a day. The museum is not a regular museum with ancient artifacts located inside a building. At Hagley, you will get to tour the grounds, gardens, mills, and buildings across the large mass of land. The Hagley Museum was once the estate of the DuPont family and was a working mill that produced gun powder, had workers, and was housed the family. The mills are beautiful and are still in good working condition. When you take the family to Hagley you can learn the history of industrialization and how powder mills used to work in the 1800’s. The whole family can also hike or bike the trails and look for stones and precious rock located in the hills. Hagley museum also offers exhibits that change often. Some of the exhibits in the visitor center include how the innovations of Dupont have influenced our current lifestyle. In the summertime there are special events and offers that include dollar days or fireworks. When I first visited Hagley it was with my school on a fieldtrip and I have gone back often since then. On the trip we hiked the trails and toured the mills which are located on the water. After the hike we ate out lunch outside on the picnic tables. We then entered the visitor center to look at the exhibits and visit the gift shop. Hagley Museum is a great place to take the family because you get to learn the real history and culture of Delaware. http://www.hagley.lib.de.us/info.html
