Cape May County Zoo, Absecon, NJ
Our family stayed in Absecon, NJ when we took a day trip to Cape May for the purpose of visiting the zoo. Having heard it was "free", relying on whatever a visitor would donate, we were uncertain how great an experience the zoo would be.
It was a small zoo in comparison to the Bronx Zoo or the National Zoo in Washington DC but we as a family will visit the zoo again when we have the opportunity. The Cape May County Zoo located in Cape May Court House, NJ is a wonderful outing that fits any budget. This is a full zoo where admission is free. There is a request for donations, but all are allowed to visit regardless of the ability to donate.
A visit to this zoo is one of those rare opportunities where you can get more than what you paid for. This zoo was established over thirty-three years ago beginning with an African lion, some spider monkeys, barnyard animals and some New Jersey wildlife. Today, Cape May Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and there are over 250 different species of animals.
There are literally lions and tigers and bears as well as crocodiles, birds and amphibians. Cape May also has successfully bred snow leopards, whereby only eleven cubs were born in accredited zoos last year. Another interesting exhibit are the flamingos that were originally from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch.
Food is available at the concession stand and no food is allowed to be brought into the zoo. The Safari Cafe provides full meals or light snacks. However, the zoo is located in Cape May County Central Park where there are picnic areas available.
There is wheelchair and stroller rental available as well as a souvenir shop. Weather permitting the zoo is open every day of the year except Christmas. Winter hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Summer hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.capemaycountyzoo.org/visit-the-zoo
