Anniston Museum
Last year on a whim, my family toured the Anniston Museum of Natural History and it was far and away one of our favorite day trips of the year.
The admission price is reasonable ($6 for adults and $5 for kids), plus our 2 year old got in for free.
My 10 year old son, being a huge dinosaur fan, still raves about the prehistoric exhibit hall, which features life size dinosaur models and a room built to look like a cave, which really gives you a sense of the enormity of both.
The stuffed wild game animals - lions, elephants and giraffes - also proved very popular with both of my older kids.
I thought they might find the nearby bird exhibit nearby duller, but the staff made it exciting for them. They were able to answer all the questions that sprung from my 4 year old's mind, which was a relief because I wasn't able to give a knowledgeable answer about how birds can fly.
So we all learned something on the tour. The museum also has several lovely outdoor spaces, including a nature trail, which is something close to a mile so it was a nice stretch of the legs. There's a stream and thick forest, and it was a nice change of pace to be outside with some unstructured time.
Also outdoors is the birds of prey exhibit, which featured birds that can't, for various reasons, be released back into the wild. Overall, it was a fantastic trip.
