Absecon Lighthouse, NJ
One great place for families to visit in New Jersey is the historic Absecon Lighthouse. It is New Jersey's tallest lighthouse, the third tallest in the United States, and is over 150 years old!
What makes it even better is that it has free parking! Anyone who has ever visited the New Jersey shore area knows that parking comes at a premium cost.
The lighthouse is available to climb during daylight hours making for a fantastic journey culminating in a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean, beach, and Atlantic City, New Jersey. You should be ready for the climb, however, because it is not for the faint of heart. It is a 228 step climb to reach the top.
There are often special events going on at the lighthouse which are listed on the Absecon Lighthouse website. These events include Wacky Wednesday, where kids are invited to make crafts and climb the lighthouse, and the "Keeper Sleeper" overnight program for youth groups. My favorite event happens in October every year when they offer the Haunted Lighthouse climb!
Along with the lighthouse, there is also a gift shop on site so that you can get memorabilia to remember your trip and an educational museum to learn more about one the oldest lighthouses in New Jersey.
You can visit the Absecon Lighthouse website at http://www.abseconlighthouse.org/
. The website comes complete with all information needed to visit this historic landmark as well as a real time video feed from the top of the lighthouse! Have fun and enjoy your visit!
